This little light of mine... 💡

 

This week at Birch and Stone, everything was about energy: what gives us energy, things that preserve our energy, and how to allocate our energy. 

Now, I'm a big nerd, so my first thought was of The Force in Star Wars.

The Force, Obi-Wan Kenobi says, is "an energy created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together." 

That seems pretty true for our explorations on energy over the past week. Our energy level each day is influenced by the conversations we have, the foods that we eat, the activities we do, and the rooms in which we live. It can come from self-compassionate rest or a wild dance party. And in any given B&S Zoom room, energy is something that we give one another. 

See? The Force.

Of course, the other thing that came to mind about energy is one of the basic laws of our universe (and not a galaxy far, far away).

Energy, any physics teacher will tell you, can neither be created nor destroyed. What looks like an object at rest is still full of energy... we just call it something different.

Potential.

From the outside, potential can look like "nothing is happening."

But then that potential energy becomes kinetic. It becomes obvious to everyone that it is in motion. And it rushes forward into its next state of being. Eventually, the friction of the universe slows its motion until it appears still again -- but somewhere new, or as something different, or both.

I find a lot of peace in combining those ideas of energy. The Force reminds me that energy is shared, and physics, that our lives are always moving us onward, even in moments that feel like stagnation.

Even as we become someone new, or if we land somewhere unfamiliar on our journey, we share our energy with those who share theirs with us. 

Potential surrounds us and binds us together.

Luminous beings are we. 💫

You are known and beloved as "DJ TJ," and you seem to have an applicable song for every situation! What do you think is the power of music to influence a moment?

Music is medicine…It just makes us feel good!  It is more than something we listen to—it’s something we share. It has a unique way of bringing people together, lifting spirits, sparking conversation, and creating moments that become lasting memories. No matter where we come from or what season of life we’re in, music reminds us that we are all connected.

One of your special jobs at Birch & Stone is the weekly weight check-ins for Beyond the Scale. Talking about weight is such a fraught topic, especially for women. Members of B&S frequently mention that they feel so comfortable discussing their weight health with you! What is the biggest lesson you've learned over the years working with people on a lifestyle change journey?

I look forward to connecting with Birch & Stone members for our weekly check ins! In working with members on their wellness goals, I have learned that every body has a story. Behind every number is a lifetime of experiences, challenges, victories, disappointments, and resilience. Weight is only one small part of someone’s journey—it is not your identity, your value, or your measure of success.  Together we celebrate healthy choices, growing confidence, increased strength, and the courage to keep showing up, even when the journey feels difficult.

I am here to listen, encourage, and walk alongside each of you with understanding and respect. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to be inspired by each and every one of YOU!

You are one of the Birch & Stone staff members who lives in Chicagoland, so as a fellow Chicagoan, I have to ask... what's your go-to deep dish pizza order?

Lou Malnati’s all the way!  It is a classic Chicago-style deep dish experience for sure!  And my favorite is “The Lou’!  The ingredients include a buttery crust, mozzarella, spinach, mushrooms, sliced Roma tomatoes, topped with shredded cheddar cheese… 'at’s a piece of pizza… so good! Next time you’re in the neighborhood, let’s get some deep dish together!
